The purpose of synovial fluid is to reduce friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement. Hyaluronic Acid is a major component of synovial fluid, being one of the main lubricating components. Hyaluronic Acid is also a major component of skin, where it is involved in tissue repair. It contributes to tissue hydrodynamics, movement and proliferation of cells.
Hyaluronan (in HY-50 preparation) is injectable Hyaluronic Acid used in the treatment of articular disorders in horses. It is especially used for synovitis associated with equine osteoarthritis. It is also indicated for carpal and fetlock joint dysfunctions, but not when joint sepsis or fracture are suspected. It can be injected directly into an affected joint, or intravenously for less localised disorders.
Hygain’s Hyaglyde is an easy gel solution, administered orally (syringed onto the tongue). It has 150mg per 10ml of high molecular Hyaluronic Acid. It also contains natural antioxidants and natural Vitamin E. A bottle of Hyaglyde contains 100 doses. Initial administration is 20 ml per day for the first seven days, and then 10ml per day thereafter.
